Come join us for a hands-on workshop where we’ll dive into the world of street photography. We’ll explore the techniques that make it such a powerful art form, along with the history behind it.

A Glimpse Into the History of Street Photography: Street photography has its roots in the early 20th century, with pioneers like Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Frank documenting everyday life in spontaneous, yet profound ways. It thrives on capturing fleeting moments that tell the story of the human condition, making it one of the most powerful forms of visual storytelling.

Whether you're a beginner or refining your skills, this workshop will guide you from chaos to composition!

Introduction to Street Photography:

  • Master the art of capturing candid moments and the essence of urban life

  • Understand key composition, lighting, and timing techniques to enhance your shots

  • Develop your unique photographic style and storytelling abilities

This is your chance to put the techniques you’ve learned into practice as you capture the dynamic and vibrant scenes of Kalimpong’s lively streets. Get ready to immerse yourself in the rhythm of the town, spot compelling moments, and refine your street photography skills in real time!

Photo Review Session:

After our photo walk, we’ll gather to review the shots you’ve captured. You’ll receive personalised feedback and valuable tips to enhance your photography, helping you refine your technique and build on the skills you've learned throughout the day.

Know your Mentor - Birat Rai was born in 1995 in Kalimpong, West Bengal, India. He is currently pursuing his Ph.D. in Agriculture from Uttar Banga Krishi Viswavidyalaya, Coochbehar. Alongside his academic journey, Birat is a passionate street photographer.

For the past five years, Birat has been documenting the streets of his hometown, Kalimpong, through his personal project titled “Just Here and There.” This collection represents a series of moments and memories he’s captured as he wanders through the town, photographing life as it happens around him. His work focuses on the raw emotions and fleeting absurdities of everyday life, using street photography to build connections with people he meets along the way. Through his lens, Birat shares a sense of vulnerability and sincerity, hoping that his photographs will hold cultural or historical significance for future generations. He envisions that 20 or 30 years from now, viewers will feel the same connection he has with the town, its people, and life itself.

Birat’s approach to street photography is deeply personal and grounded in the environment around him.

Photographing on the streets of Kalimpong can be challenging. The town’s pace is slow, and there isn't much hustle and bustle. But it's exactly this mundaneness of everyday life—the small gestures, expressions, and emotions of the 'Kalimbungays'—that draws me in and inspires me to capture the essence of the town.
