The Basics of Photography Workshop - Dzongu, Sikkim

The Confluence Collective (TCC) conducted a two-day Basics of Photography workshop with young Tourism students from HEE GYATHANG Senior Secondary School in Dzongu, North Sikkim. The workshop, held on the 23rd and 24th of March 2021, aimed at providing students with an introductory understanding of photography as part of the collective’s community engagement efforts.

This initiative was designed to introduce the students to the fundamentals of photography, providing them with the skills and knowledge to better engage with their surroundings, especially as future tourism professionals in a region known for its natural beauty. TCC members Praveen Chettri, Kunga Tashi, and Ashwin Sharma were the primary facilitators and resource persons for this session.

The workshop also marks an important step in TCC's ongoing community outreach program, which seeks to foster local talent, encourage creativity, and strengthen connections with communities in the region.

The Basics of Photography workshop was structured around hands-on activities and demonstrations, focusing on essential photographic skills such as composition, lighting, framing, and camera handling.

Key Highlights:

  • Introduction to Photography: The workshop began with a discussion on the importance of photography as both an art form and a medium for storytelling. Students were encouraged to explore their creative expression through the lens.

  • Camera Handling & Composition: Participants were introduced to the fundamental concepts of composition—how to frame a shot, what makes an effective photograph, and how to use light to enhance their images. The facilitators demonstrated how to use different camera settings, whether on smartphones or professional cameras.

  • Practical Sessions: The students had the opportunity to put theory into practice by capturing images around their school and the surrounding environment. This hands-on session allowed students to explore their creativity and gain confidence in their ability to take photographs.

  • Group Discussions and Feedback: After each practical session, the students gathered for group discussions where their work was reviewed, and feedback was provided. The facilitators offered constructive criticism, helping students improve their technical and creative skills.

  • Skill Development: To provide an introduction to the basics of photography for students pursuing a career in tourism, helping them document and communicate the beauty and stories of their local environment effectively.

  • Community Engagement: To engage local students with the art of photography and foster a connection between young minds and the cultural heritage of the region.

  • Encouraging Creative Expression: To encourage young people to explore creative ways of presenting their perspectives and experiences through photography.

The Confluence Collective would like to extend its sincere gratitude to the MLAs NGO Dzongu, Hee Gyathang Senior Secondary School, and the local community for supporting this workshop and providing the space for such valuable interactions.
